Summer Reading Facts 2025

Summer is for fun and the great outdoors. But research indicates that students can experience learning loss, often referred to as the “summer slide,” during summer break. This loss can manifest as a decline in academic skills, particularly in reading and math, with some students losing the equivalent of a month or more of learning, according to research. However, the extent of this loss can vary from child to child. Younger students, particularly those in early elementary grades, may be more susceptible to summer learning loss.
Engaging in educational activities, even in informal settings, can help mitigate learning loss. Encourage reading. Reading for pleasure can help maintain and improve reading comprehension and vocabulary. Incorporate learning into fun activities like games, puzzles, and educational outings. Establishing a structured routine that includes some dedicated learning time can be beneficial. A routine that includes reading is best as reading comprehension helps developing math skills.
